Comparison of Surds

Comparison of surds is possible only when they are of the same order. The radicals can be compared.

e.g.,  sqrt[3]{2} and sqrt[3]{8}=2^frac{1}{3} and 8^frac{1}{3} and since 8>2

          therefore                         sqrt[3]{8}>sqrt[3]{2}

rightarrow   The symbol sqrt[n]{a} is called the radical sign, where n and a are called surd and radical and, respectively.

        by sqrt[n]{a} is a surd is understood that a is rational number and sqrt[n]{a} is an irrational number.

If the surds are of different order and different base, we first reduce them to the same order.
